A similar demand for the formation of the 8th Pay commission is building up as far as central government employees are concerned. This committee was implemented in January 2016 and the nine years of the 7th Pay Commission has passed. Earlier, a new pay commission is constituted every 10 years and 7th Pay Commission will complete its term in January 2026. However, the formation of the 8th Pay Commission has drawn much concern among employees due to the delay.
What Would the New Pay Commission offer?
The pay commissions are aimed at revising remuneration and pension of government employees and workers. It also helps make betters provisions for funding employee and retiree benefits. It turned out that the negotiations regarding the 8th Pay Commission are in progress, and it might be created soon according to media sources.
Role of the Fitment Factor
The fitment factor plays a crucial role in increasing employee salaries. Under the 7th Pay Commission, it was set at 2.57, which raised the minimum salary from ₹7,000 to ₹18,000. For the 8th Pay Commission, expectations are that the fitment factor will rise to 2.86, potentially increasing the minimum salary to ₹51,480. Similarly, pensions may rise from ₹9,000 to ₹25,740.
The expectations of employee associations are that something needs to be done about these issues.
Hence the National Council of Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM) has been fully supporting the 8th Pay Commission. Out of the ten bills referred to mooting, representatives have tabled two memorandums, one to the previous Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba in July 2024 and another to incumbent Secretary of Cabinet TV Somanathan in August 2024. The major target of their actions is trying to prod the authorities into raising wages and other incentives for workers.
Waiting for government to announce
It was rumored that the new 8th Pay Commission could be implemented during the 2024-25 Union Budget. But as yet there is no official decision. The employees still keep their ears to the ground waiting for the good news any time from the management.
What Employees Expect
In the event of its adoption, the 8th Pay Commission means a sweet story for millions of government employees and pensioners. Such increases for salaries and pensions will enable them address the increased living cost as well as enjoy a better standard living. Now, everyone is waiting for the government’s approval of the same.
